College Chinese is the name of a college course. In 1930s and 1940s, because the educational circles imitated the educational model of the former Soviet Union, the "Freshman Chinese" was cancelled in 1950s. 1978, "College Chinese" was reopened at the initiative of educators, teachers and the Soviet Union.

In 2006, the Outline of the 11th Five-Year Plan for Cultural Development put forward: "Colleges and universities should create conditions to offer China Chinese courses to all college students." The quality project of the Ministry of Education has set up four construction projects: advanced mathematics, college English, computer foundation and college Chinese. In the past, college Chinese could not get this kind of "treatment".
