Beijing Foreign Studies University is one of the national key universities directly under the Ministry of Education, and it is the one with the longest history, the most comprehensive level and the most languages among foreign language colleges in China.

Beijing Foreign Studies University, formerly known as Yan 'an Foreign Language School, was founded in 194 1, based on the Russian Brigade of Kangsan Branch. Beijing Foreign Studies University is one of the first authorized units for master's and doctor's degrees in China. There are 9 doctoral programs in English language and literature, Russian language and literature, German language and literature, Arabic language and literature, Japanese language and literature, Spanish language and literature, European language and literature, foreign linguistics, foreign language and literature and applied linguistics.
