Its predecessor was the Weaving Department of Beijing Institute of Technology, which was founded in 19 12. Northwest Institute of Textile Technology was established in 1978, and it belongs to the Ministry of Textile Industry. It is one of the three universities directly under the Ministry of Textile Industry (East China Institute of Textile Technology, Tianjin Institute of Textile Technology and Northwest Institute of Textile Technology). In 2006, it was renamed Xi 'an University of Engineering with the approval of the Ministry of Education.
