The school was founded on 1954. In 2000, it was formed by the merger of Shanghai Institute of Light Industry, Shanghai Institute of Metallurgy and Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology. In 2006, Shanghai Institute of Spice, a subsidiary of the former Ministry of Light Industry, was merged into the school.

In 2008, it officially became a master's degree authorized unit. 20 16 was renamed as "Shanghai Universities of Applied Sciences" with the approval of the Ministry of Education. 20 17 became the project construction unit that awarded the doctorate.
