Yunnan has Yunnan University, Kunming University of Science and Technology, Yunnan University for Nationalities, Yunnan Normal University, Yunnan Agricultural University, Southwest Forestry University, Kunming Medical University, Yunnan University of Finance and Economics, Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, etc.

Among the 32 undergraduate colleges in Yunnan, according to the nature of running a school, 23 are public undergraduate colleges and 9 are private undergraduate colleges (four of which have not yet been handed over). It is obvious that Yunnan's higher education is dominated by one city. Among the 32 undergraduate colleges, not only the provincial capital Kunming monopolizes 20, but almost all the high-quality higher education resources are located in Kunming. Yunnan Art College, the only art college, is also in Kunming.

As another important city in the province, Dali is the second largest city in higher education in the province. There are only two undergraduate universities, Dali College and Universities of Applied Sciences in western Yunnan, which are far from Kunming and cannot be compared with other cities.
