The 985 Project is an important decision made by People's Republic of China (PRC) and the State Council to build a world-class university at the turn of the century. It is also called "Project 985" because it was put forward in May 1998.

The first batch of "985 Project" built nine universities, namely Peking University, Tsinghua University, China University of Science and Technology, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Xi Jiaotong University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University and Harbin Institute of Technology. There is a difference between 985 and double first class:

First, 985 University emphasizes the overall evaluation of the school's comprehensive strength, while double-class universities pay more attention to subject evaluation, and evaluate the strength of a university by its subject strength.

Second: 985 is a solidified label, while Shuangliu is dynamic, with inflow and outflow. Double first-class is a dynamic construction process, that is to say, a university is rated as a first-class university this time.

Thirdly, 985 is an upgraded version, and first-class universities and first-class disciplines are two parallel evaluation systems. First-class universities should have first-class disciplines, and universities with first-class disciplines are first-class universities.
