It has been selected as a key supporting university in the basic capacity building project of central and western universities of the Ministry of Education.

The school has 19 teaching units and 66 undergraduate majors, including 1 national comprehensive reform pilot major, 5 national characteristic majors, 7 provincial characteristic majors, 4 national first-class majors, 8 provincial first-class majors and 6 engineering education professional certification majors. Taiyuan University of Science and Technology, founded in 1952, was originally Shanxi Machinery Manufacturing Industry School, which was affiliated to Shanxi Industry Department. 1953 was placed under the Central Ministry of Machinery Industry and renamed Taiyuan Machine Building School. 1955 the forging specialty of Hankou machine building school merged with the forging specialty of Changchun automobile industry school. 1960 was renamed Taiyuan institute of heavy machinery. 1965 Dalian university of technology and Shenyang institute of mechanical and electrical engineering merged into the major of lifting and transportation machinery. 1998 was placed under the Shanxi Provincial People's Government. In 2004, the Chemical Branch of Shanxi Comprehensive Vocational and Technical College merged. In the same year, it was renamed Taiyuan University of Science and Technology.
