At present, there are only a dozen undergraduate colleges offering urban rail transit related majors in China. For example, Beijing Jiaotong University, Southwest Jiaotong University and other universities under the former Ministry of Railways have set up urban rail transit majors, and some local application-oriented universities have also set up urban rail transit majors to train applied urban rail transit professionals. Suzhou University and Shanghai University of Engineering Science have also established colleges named after urban rail transit.
However, different levels of colleges and universities have different training orientation and objectives for urban rail transit talents. The "985 Project" and "2 1 1 Project" colleges headed by Beijing Jiaotong University have good quality of students, mainly cultivating high-end engineering and technical talents needed for urban rail transit planning, design, operation management and control. After graduation, most students go to middle-level positions through three to five years of grassroots training. Some higher vocational colleges have also set up urban rail transit majors, focusing on cultivating first-line skilled talents.
