The original seven colleges became seven components of the University of Wales, and two newly added colleges became the University of Wales College. In 2003, with the approval of the Privy Council, the latter two schools became full members of the University of Wales. In 2004, the Medical College of the University of Wales merged with Cardiff University, and Cardiff University withdrew from the University of Wales and became a joint cooperative institution with the University of Wales.

In 2007, the Royal Welsh Academy of Music and Drama withdrew from the University of Wales.

In the same year, the University of Wales abandoned the original joint university system and changed to a university alliance. Each member school becomes an independent university and has the right to award degrees independently. 20 10 the former St. David's college merged with Trinity University College, a famous British university, and was renamed Trinity University.
