Northwest Normal University is a key university jointly established by Gansu Provincial People's Government and Ministry of Education, and one of the 14 universities in the western region supported by the state. Its predecessor was National Beiping Normal University, and its predecessor was Shi Jing University Teachers College, which was established in 1902. Before 1958, the school was one of the six national key normal universities directly under the Ministry of Education, and 1988 was renamed Northwest Normal University.

School conditions are good. The headquarters covers an area of 960 mu, the new campus covers an area of 729 mu, and the designated green space is about 1300 mu. The total planned building area of the school building is 833,000 square meters, including 272,000 square meters of teaching auxiliary rooms. The total value of all kinds of teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment is 288.6963 million yuan, and all kinds of literature resources are more than 3.844 million copies.

Since its independent establishment, the school has trained more than 230,000 students of all kinds. The school enrolls students from 3/kloc-0 provinces (cities and autonomous regions) nationwide, with 36,393 students of all kinds.
