The University of Utah is a public research university located in Salt Lake City, the capital of Utah. It is the flagship school of Utah's higher education system. More than 100 bachelor's degree courses and 92 second-level master's degree courses are offered.

Utah also has a law school and the only medical school. The University of Utah is a member of the "Pacific Twelve Schools Alliance" of the American Western Sports League.

The University of Utah was founded on February 28th, 1850 by Brigham Young, the leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly known as Mormonism). Originally named Desert University, it is the oldest higher education institution in Utah.

At first, the school didn't have a fixed campus, so it chose to take classes in the private homes of residents wherever it could be found. Due to lack of funds, the school was closed at 1853 and reopened at 1967, during which it taught intermittently in Salt Lake City.

1867, the then desert state legislature rebuilt the desert university. 1892, changed to the current name-Utah. The name of the University of Utah was four years earlier than that of Utah, and it was moved to its present site in 1900.
