The school, formerly known as Tianjin University of Technology, began to recruit undergraduates in the name of Tianjin University of Technology in199, and was formally established in198 with the approval of the State Council.

1996, the former Tianjin Institute of Technology merged with the former Tianjin Institute of Technology No.1 Branch (Tianjin University Electromechanical Branch), Tianjin Institute of Technology No.2 Branch (Tianjin University Branch) and Tianjin University Metallurgical Branch to form a new Tianjin Institute of Technology. In 2004, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Tianjin University of Technology was renamed Tianjin University of Technology.
