The school was founded in 1898 by Zhang Zhidong, then governor of Huguang, and was approved by Emperor Guangxu.
After several changes, Huazhong Agricultural College was established by Hubei Agricultural College, Wuhan University Agricultural College, Hunan Agricultural College, Henan University Agricultural College, Nanchang University Agricultural College (some departments), Sun Yat-sen University Agricultural College, Guangxi University Agricultural College and Jiangxi Agricultural College on 1952.
1979, approved by People's Republic of China (PRC) and the State Council, China, was upgraded to a national key university directly under People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Ministry of Agriculture. 1985 was renamed as "Huazhong Agricultural University". In 2000, it was transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture of People's Republic of China (PRC) to the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC).
