Southwest University of Science and Technology originated from Chongqing No.1 Civil Engineering School founded by 1952 and Chongqing Civil Engineering School formed by the merger of the two schools.
The school has run schools in Chongqing, Shimian and Mianyang. 1978, Sichuan Institute of Building Materials Technology moved to the former Mianyang Branch of Tsinghua University, and some employees and school-running resources of Mianyang Branch of Tsinghua University were merged into the college. 1993 was renamed Southwest Institute of Technology. In 2000, the former Southwest Institute of Technology and Mianyang Institute of Economics and Technology merged to form Southwest University of Science and Technology.
