Since the 1990s, in the process of establishing a world-class university, Tsinghua University has clearly put forward the goal of actively participating in national defense scientific research and developing aerospace disciplines according to the strategic needs of national development and the trend of world science and technology development, and seized the good opportunity of the "985 Plan" and invested heavily in this field in the first phase of the "985 Plan". During the period of 1998, the school established an interdisciplinary space technology research center, and the "Aerospace Tsinghua-1" microsatellite and "Naxing-1" were successfully launched in 2000 and 2004 respectively.
In terms of personnel training, the institute has successively set up courses such as aircraft design and engineering, engineering mechanics and aerospace engineering, and "aerospace and new military revolution", and trained high-level and high-quality professionals through national defense students and orientation students. In order to meet China's urgent need for high-quality personnel training and strategic high-tech development in the aerospace field, further integrate and give play to the comprehensive advantages of our university's multi-disciplines, and comprehensively promote the construction and development of related disciplines with integrated and high-level aerospace science and technology research as the combination point. After long-term brewing and careful preparation, Tsinghua University University of Aeronautics and Astronautics was formally established on May 8, 2004.
In aerospace, the college pays attention to establishing long-term and good cooperative relations with famous aerospace colleges and research institutes at home and abroad. Before the establishment of the College, Tsinghua University signed an agreement on scientific research cooperation and personnel training with China No.1 Airlines in 2003. In the same year, the United States General Electric (GE) Engine Company established the Joint Research Center for Jet Propulsion in Tsinghua University. In 2005, the Tsinghua University-Shenyang Aircraft Design and Research Institute Joint Research Center was established.
At present, the institute of aeronautics and astronautics is composed of the department of aeronautics and astronautics, the department of engineering mechanics and the research center of aeronautics and astronautics. The Ministry of Aeronautics and Astronautics has five research institutes: Aircraft Design Institute, Propulsion and Power Technology Institute, Man-machine Environment Institute, Aerospace Information Technology Institute and Seismic Wave Institute. The Department of Engineering Mechanics consists of five institutes: Institute of Solid Mechanics, Institute of Fluid Mechanics, Institute of Engineering Dynamics, Institute of Engineering Thermophysics and Institute of Biomechanics and Medical Engineering. Cultivating high-level scientific and technological talents for the country is an important goal of the college. Since 2003, the Academic Committee of our university has agreed to change the undergraduate training plan of the Department of Engineering Mechanics into "Engineering Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering", and it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in the same year. There are about 360 undergraduates and 380 postgraduates (180 doctoral students and 200 master students), and 90 freshmen are recruited from home and abroad every year. The master's degree program in astronaut engineering to be held in 2005 will make an important contribution to China's manned space flight.
Mechanics and heat have a long history, rapid development and wide application in modern science and technology, and have the characteristics of technical science. Their professional knowledge structure is the theoretical and technical basis of many industries and various engineering disciplines, and it is the cradle for cultivating talents who can have an overview of the overall development of technology. In order to strengthen the close relationship between the specialty and the specific engineering department and cultivate high-level talents for China's national defense construction, in 2002, the national defense-oriented specialty "Aircraft Design and Engineering" was added to the Department of Engineering Mechanics. In 2002, it began to recruit national defense students.
Among the first-class doctoral programs in mechanics, there are three doctoral programs in solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, general mechanics and mechanical foundation, two doctoral programs in engineering thermophysics and two postdoctoral research stations. Solid mechanics, fluid mechanics and engineering thermophysics are the national key disciplines approved by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, with the highest scores. In 2005, the Institute added a master's degree program in aerospace science and technology.
There are 80 in-service teachers in the college, including 35 professors, 35 associate professors and 0 lecturers/kloc-0. Academician Huang Kezhi, ZY Guo and Yang Wei of China Academy of Sciences; Du Qinghua and Wang Yongzhi, two academicians of China Academy of Engineering.
In the recent aerospace discipline planning process, the Institute has established a group of "academic echelons" of teachers in the relatively stable and important academic direction, as the basic academic units for discipline construction, teacher team construction, scientific research base construction and scientific research in the Institute, so as to ensure the sustained and stable development of discipline construction and academic research.
The teaching, research and office facilities of the hospital cover an area of about10.5 million square meters, and the total value of the existing fixed assets of the hospital is about 50 million yuan.
Tsinghua University Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics is the discipline platform for the university to enter the aerospace field, organizing discipline construction, scientific research and achievement transformation in the aerospace field. Its basic orientation is: (1) a high-level and integrated training ground for aerospace disciplines; (2) Organizers of pioneering and innovative research in the aerospace field where the country has great demand; (3) The main channel to guide Tsinghua University teachers and students to contribute to China's civil and national defense space undertakings.
The development concept of the Academy of Aeronautics and Astronautics is clear: "Give full play to the advantages of mechanics and thermal science and build aerospace science and technology". The work of the college should gather strength and Qi Xin should work together; Unite people's hearts and create harmony; Concise disciplines, forge ahead with determination, and achieve the development goal of "entering the mainstream, having characteristics and improving the level". The first 15 year development of the Academy of Aeronautics and Astronautics can be described by a three-step goal. In the first five years, complete the discipline layout, cultivate a group of high-level research directions with obvious advantages in the aerospace field, and build a college suitable for undertaking the major research needs of the national aerospace. In the second five years, the discipline construction will be completed, and an entity with advantages in high-end research in aerospace field will be formed, which can develop from discipline to major scientific research tasks. In the third five years, an internationally renowned research entity will be formed, which can play a leading role in China's space research.
