The School of Life Sciences of Northwestern Polytechnical University was established in April 2004. It is a strategic decision made by our Party Committee to build a "domestic first-class, world-famous high-level research university" by judging the situation, grasping the international scientific and technological development trend at the end of the Tenth Five-Year Plan, and combining the national conditions of China's higher education and scientific and technological development, especially the long-term construction and development of our school.

The guiding ideology of college construction is: guided by the huge demand in the fields of national aerospace, aviation and navigation, supported by the core disciplines of life sciences, combining basic disciplines with technology and engineering disciplines, and combining basic research with applied research to build the college into a high-level teaching and research base with distinctive discipline characteristics.

The college focuses on the research and teaching of three characteristic disciplines: space biology, space pharmaceutical biotechnology and space biomedical engineering. We will carry out research on the basic laws of life phenomena at the molecular, cellular and overall levels, as well as research on the application and development of biotechnology drugs and biomedical engineering products, give full play to the comprehensive advantages of interdisciplinary subjects, and form a number of innovative teams in this field.

Subjects cover molecular cell biology, biophysics, microbiology, physiology, pharmacy, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, structural biology, bioinformatics, biomechanics, materials science, biomedical engineering and so on.

There are currently 0/3 professors/kloc-0, 4 associate professors, 0/0 lecturers/kloc-0 (all teachers have doctorates), 0/3 post-doctoral students/kloc-0, and 0 experimental technicians 10 (senior engineers 1 person).

During the implementation of the "985 Project" to build "a world-class university and a domestic first-class and internationally renowned high-level research university", the Academy of Life Sciences was approved in 2004 and invested 30 million yuan to start the construction of the "985 Project" provincial and ministerial innovation platform-"Space Biotechnology Laboratory". After three years of construction, in 2007, it won the first batch of key subject laboratories of the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. This laboratory is the first key laboratory specialized in space biology and biotechnology research in domestic universities.

The college pays attention to academic exchanges at home and abroad, carries out academic exchanges, scientific research cooperation and joint training with well-known universities and scientific research institutions at home and abroad, and has established cooperative relations with Harvard Medical School, FDA, Northwestern University, Hamburg University in Germany, Laval University in Canada and other institutions. Cooperate with China Astronaut Research and Training Center, Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology of China Academy of Sciences, Institute of Modern Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Space Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences, etc.

The college has always been aiming at establishing a teaching and research base of life science with high starting point, high level and characteristics, taking scientific research as the leading factor, discipline construction as the main line, talent construction as the main body, and national major demand as the traction, adhering to the school motto of "honesty and being the first", carrying forward the school spirit of "three realities and one innovation", and striving to realize the leap-forward development of scientific research, talent training, platform construction, system innovation and scientific and technological industrialization.
