In the Qing Dynasty, there was only Shi Jing University Hall (Peking University) in China, which was a national university directly under the central government.

During the period of Beiyang government, there were National Peking University, National Beiyang University, National Shanxi University and National Southeast University.

During the period of the National Government, there were many national universities, including Central University, Huaqiao University, Jiaotong University, Tsinghua University, Taiwan Province Provincial University, Sun Yat-sen University, Zhejiang University, Tongji University, Labor University, Qingdao University, Northeastern University, Hunan University, Southwest Associated University, Guangxi University, Zhongzheng University, Guizhou University, Chongqing University, Chengchi University, Lanzhou University and National University.

1949 10 after the founding of People's Republic of China (PRC), all the national universities removed the word "national".
