School of Space Science and Physics of Shandong University was established in 2003. In the same year, the college signed an agreement with the National Astronomical Observatory of Chinese Academy of Sciences to establish Weihai Observatory and the Department of Space Science and Applied Physics of Shandong University. In order to explore a new development model of the dominant discipline of "space science", the Institute of Space Science of Shandong University was established in 2008 and started its physical operation on 20 13. Breakthroughs have been made in the introduction and training of outstanding talents, laboratory construction and instrument research and development, major scientific research projects, and scientific research work with international influence. Discipline (team) was selected as the "double first-class" discipline peak plan characteristic discipline of Shandong University at the end of 20 15, and was selected as the first-class team of Shandong University's climbing plan innovation team at the end of 20 18. The research team participated in the research or demonstration of major national space exploration projects such as Kuafu Project, Chang 'e Project, Mars Exploration, and major national science and technology infrastructure construction projects, making Shandong University one of the few universities in China to participate in related research. Shandong University Observatory participated in a large number of international joint observation studies and carried out national space debris monitoring tasks for many times. At present, 14 asteroids permanently numbered by the International Asteroid Center have been discovered.
