history
Bacon College in Georgetown was renamed the University of Kentucky on 1858 and moved to Harrods Castle, but it was quickly destroyed in the civil war. 1865, the University of Kentucky, whose campus was destroyed, merged with the University of Transylvania, which was in financial difficulties. The name of the school is still the University of Kentucky, and the campus is moved to Lexington, where the University of Transylvania is located. The College of Agriculture and Machinery of the University of Kentucky was established with the support of the Charter College Act of the Moreel administration, which stipulated that each state could obtain 30,000 acres of land from the federal government to establish colleges to teach military, engineering and agronomy. 1869, the college awarded the first degree, and in the same year, james kennedy patterson became the president. 1878, due to the disharmony of guiding ideology, the school split. Some of them kept the name of the University of Kentucky and later changed it back to the original name of the University of Transylvania. The other part was renamed Kentucky College of Agriculture and Machinery in 1879. Lexington provided additional funds and donated 52 acres of land (now the central part of the University of Kentucky campus), which is the predecessor of the University of Kentucky today.
1880, the school opened a teachers' college and began to recruit female students, but female students were not eligible for degrees. 1888 was the first time that women were awarded degrees. 1904 completed the first female dormitory-Paterson hall, which is also the first building outside the central campus. Students living here need to cross a waterlogged wetland (now the student activity center) to go to the classroom. Patterson Hall was later renovated and became the oldest existing student dormitory in the University of Kentucky.
1908 The school was renamed the University of Kentucky. James kennedy patterson, the headmaster for 40 years, retired. 19 16 The school was renamed the University of Kentucky. 1949, Lyman T. Johnson, a black student, won the case and was admitted to the graduate school. From 65438 to 0954, the University of Kentucky abolished the racial requirement for students' admission.
