The University of Tokyo (Japanese: とぅきょぅだぃがく) is a national university in Japan and one of the nine imperial universities. Originated from the Kaicheng Research Institute (Shu Fan Research Institute) and the Medical Research Institute established by the Tokugawa shogunate in the Edo era. The University of Tokyo is the first university established in Japan according to the modern academic system and the highest academic hall in Japan. The graduates include many national leaders.
