Fudan University was founded in 1905 and formerly known as Fudan College. It is the first institution of higher learning independently established by the people of China. Its founder was Ma, a famous educator in modern China, and the first chairman was Sun Yat-sen, the father of the country. The name of "Fudan" is selected from the famous sentence "The sun and the moon compete for glory, Fudan is thriving" in the Biography of Yu Xia, aiming at self-improvement and pinning the hope of China intellectuals to run schools and save the country at that time. 19 17 Fudan college was renamed as private Fudan university.
