The classification of the famous Collection of Classics and History and the compilation of Yongle Dadian and Sikuquanshu are similar to the work of modern library science. German scholar Schleitinger first put forward the name "library science", which has been developed in the west for nearly two centuries. Modern library science in China was introduced from abroad at the beginning of this century, which is between natural science and technical science.

Secondly, library science is a relatively unpopular major. Its curriculum is mainly liberal arts, mainly divided into two aspects: theoretical library science and applied library science. Modern library management informatization requires mastering computer theory, especially database theory. Among domestic universities, most universities offering this major are comprehensive universities, such as Wuhan University, Sun Yat-sen University, Northwest University and Yunnan University. Among them, the library science major of Wuhan University has the right to award the first-class doctoral degree, and its Information Resources Research Center of Wuhan University has been approved as the key research base of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, and is regarded as a leader in this field.

Graduates of this major generally work in major libraries, bookstores and other places, and their employment is relatively narrow, and the demand is not too great. However, the work is relatively easy, and the challenges and competition are not great. Vocational education development

Higher professional education. It is divided into three levels: first, doctoral education. Starting from 199 1, the Department of Library Science and Information Science of Peking University has enrolled doctoral students in library science, and the School of Library Science and Information Science of Wuhan University has enrolled doctoral students in information science theory and methods and bibliography. The second is postgraduate education. 198 1 year, the the State Council Academic Degrees Committee approved the library departments of Peking University and Wuhan University to confer master's degrees. Later, the Institute of Library and Information Science of East China Normal University was added. The third is postgraduate education. That is, recruiting students from undergraduate graduates majoring in literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine and foreign languages. Those who pass the exam will receive two years of education in library science and information science, and submit papers within two years after graduation. After passing the defense, the master's degree will be awarded.

General higher education. It is also divided into three levels: first, dual-degree education, that is, undergraduate students majoring in library science and information science take other professional courses to achieve the required credits while studying professional courses, and get two bachelor's degrees when they graduate. The second is undergraduate education, which lasts for 4 years. Most of them are located in comprehensive universities (a few are located in colleges). In the 1980s, many colleges and universities changed the situation of giving priority to liberal arts, and enrolled students with two majors: library science and information science. Upon graduation, they were awarded Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees respectively. Third, college education lasts for three years, which is divided into three situations according to the enrollment management system: specialized classes run by regular universities with unified enrollment approved by the State Education Commission; University classes approved by local authorities or departments are limited to enrollment in a certain area: social universities, night universities or self-funded day universities.

Secondary professional education. The junior talents in the library and information department account for about 40%-60% of all employees. Since the mid-1980s, more than 20 secondary schools of library science have been established in China, some of which are sponsored by government departments and libraries, such as Hunan Library and Information School. Some are sponsored by universities or middle schools, such as vocational education classes run by Fudan University, Zhejiang University and Huguang Middle School; Others were founded by large enterprises.

Internationally, library science, as a discipline with a history of 200 years, is also facing a series of opportunities and development when the information age comes. At present, high-tech digital processing technology and network communication means are widely used, and libraries are also developing in the direction of digitalization and networking. Library science must change the traditional information processing flow to better adapt to the ever-changing society. The information content provided by the library is becoming more and more abundant, and its service objects are becoming less and less limited by region and time, making it more convenient for people to use the library. It can be predicted that the library will remain in the pivotal position of social information exchange, and its service function will be strengthened. There will be a considerable demand for senior talents in library science and related disciplines for a period of time.

In China, although the library cause has made great progress, it is still far from perfect. Today's society is in a period of rapid development of information, and information has become the content of life that people face every day. Obtaining and using information is the key to success in life. Library science, as a discipline that studies, processes, preserves and utilizes general social information, is faced with great demands and opportunities. At present, the discipline development is in a period of crossing with digitalization and information technology. With the social demand and the development of science and technology in China, the traditional functions of libraries will partially shrink. How to obtain information more quickly and without restriction has become a concern. The library will also be digitized and networked in order to make better use of and exchange information. Virtual online library will partially replace traditional library. At present, all major libraries have established their own websites, which greatly strengthen the functions of libraries and provide great convenience for the society. However, it should be noted that there are also problems such as insufficient online resources and unreasonable content classification, but these are inevitable problems in the development of library cause, and there will be a continuous demand for senior talents in this field for a long time to come. In addition, in the traditional sense, library science research and library management still need a lot of talents.
