Extended data

The origin of "National Key University" can be traced back to 1950s and 1960s.

From 65438 to 0959, 20 universities including China Renmin University, Peking University, Tsinghua University and China University of Science and Technology were designated as national key universities in the relevant documents issued by the state at that time.

1960, 44 key universities were added.

From 65438 to 0978, the State Council identified 88 universities including Peking University and Tsinghua University as national key universities.

At the end of the last century, after the adjustment of the management system of colleges and universities in China, a new system of central and provincial management was formed, with the provincial government as the main management.

Most universities are managed by local governments or mainly by local governments, except for minority universities that are related to the overall development of the country and universities with strong industry particularity that continue to be managed by the Ministry of Education and other minority departments entrusted by the State Council. Government officials no longer use the term "national key university". Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, most of the key universities identified by the state are directly under the Ministry of Education.
