Shantou University is a comprehensive university in Guangdong Province sponsored by the Guangdong Provincial People's Government. It is a university jointly established by the Ministry of Education, Guangdong Province and Li Ka-shing Foundation, and has been selected into the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education and the first batch of pilot universities in China.
Shantou University was established on 198 1 with the approval of the State Council. In September of the same year, the Ministry of Education approved Shantou Medical College to be merged into Shantou University and set up as Shantou University Medical College. Since 20 12, Shantou University has been jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the Guangdong Provincial People's Government and the Li Ka-shing Foundation.
