Chongqing Medical University was founded in 1956 and moved to Chongqing from Shanghai First Medical College. Its original name was Chongqing Medical College, and 1985 was renamed Chongqing Medical University. The school is one of the first units approved by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee with the right to confer doctoral and master's degrees.

It is the first batch of demonstration bases for studying in China approved by the Ministry of Education. 20 15 School became a university approved by Chongqing Municipal People's Government, National Health and Wellness Commission and Ministry of Education, and 20 16 became one of the first local universities approved by the "Academic Innovation and Intelligence Introduction Program".
