That depends on what basil is. There are sweet basil, holy basil, purple basil, green basil, dense basil, short purple basil and lemon basil. Some are edible, some can be used as medicine, and some can be used as spices. We can't generalize.

Edible Thai basil with tomatoes has a very unique flavor, whether it's made into lai, soup or sauce. Can be used as pizza, pasta sauce, sausage, soup, tomato juice and shower juice.

And salads are commonly used in Thai cooking.
