Duke University, located in Hande, North Carolina, is a private comprehensive research university with four campuses: East Campus, West Campus, Central Campus and Medical Center. Duke University was founded in 1838, formerly known as Union College, and later renamed Teachers College. With the support of the Methodist Church, the college was transformed and renamed Trinity College, and was forced to close because of the American Civil War. Later, with the support of local tobacco giants, it reopened and changed its name to Duke University.
