In 2005, the Dutch Research Center, jointly sponsored by Fudan University and university of groningen, the Netherlands, was established. Fudan University and university of groningen are two universities with many similarities. Fudan University is a famous school in China, and university of groningen is one of the best in Europe. The establishment of the Dutch Research Center not only opened a good start for further cooperation and exchanges between the two universities, but also provided a good example for exchanges and cooperation between international famous schools. After that, the two universities also launched the "2+2" undergraduate training program of Fudan University School of Economics and university of groningen School of Economics.

The communication between Tianjin and Groningen began at 1985. In April, 1993, a delegation of Groningen municipal government visited Tianjin, and visited the Tianjin Affiliated Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and several universities. The director of Huatuo Center of university of groningen Medical College signed a letter of intent with the First Affiliated Chinese Medicine Hospital of Tianjin to establish a European China traditional medicine network and training center. Since then, the two cities have achieved different degrees of results in cooperation in traditional Chinese medicine, research on prevention and treatment of occupational diseases, and exchanges between universities. Tianjin Medical College and university of groningen Medical College have jointly conducted occupational dermatitis research for several years. The two sides exchanged visits of medical personnel, and cooperated with Tianjin Changzheng Hospital to develop a new method for treating occupational dermatitis by using Dutch formula.

There are more than 8,000 China students studying in the Netherlands, of whom more than 800 are engaged in doctoral and postdoctoral research, nearly 3,000 are pursuing various master's degrees, and the rest are undergraduates. University of groningen is one of the first choice schools for China students to study in Holland, and the proportion of China students majoring in international business usually accounts for 20%.
