The Historical Evolution of Shandong University Library
190 1 year, Shandong University Hall was established with a library building, which is one of the early modern libraries in China and the beginning of the library history of Shandong University.

1924 private Qingdao university was established in Qingdao, with a library under it. 1928 was closed due to the cut-off of funds. Private Qingdao University is an important part of the history of Shandong University, and its school products and books later became the property of Shandong University.

1926, the provincial Shandong university was established by Zhang Zongchang, a warlord. 1April, 928, the Northern Expeditionary Army entered Shandong, Zhang Zongchang fell, and the school was closed.

On September 2 1930, National Shandong University was established in Qingdao. Yang Zhensheng, the first curator, and Liang Shiqiu, the librarian, devoted a lot of efforts to the work of the library. The National Shandong University Library was established in 1929 and 65438+February. It has received a batch of books from the former private Qingdao University and the former provincial Shandong University, most of which are old textbooks and are not applicable. Therefore, it bought a large number of books in Chinese and foreign languages. By 1936, the total number of books reached 87805. Among them, there are 65,287 Chinese books, 225 foreign books18, Chinese and foreign magazines 1208 and Chinese and foreign magazines 54 1 16. By 1935, the expenditure on books was 2 13383.54 yuan, accounting for 8% of the expenditure in the same period.

After the outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the school was forced to move from Qingdao to Anqing 1937+0 1 in June, and soon moved to Wanxian, Sichuan. Books, documents and archives are shipped out in three batches: the first batch of 257 boxes are shipped to Xi' an and then transferred to Wanxian (Yichang); The second batch of 837 boxes was shipped to Pukou, and all of them were lost due to the fall of Nanjing. The third batch 16 boxes were transported to Hankou and transferred to Wanxian. After the Japanese army occupied Qingdao, all the school buildings were used as naval headquarters, and all the books, instruments, furniture and other things that were not transported were burned. 1On February 23rd, 938, the Ministry of Education of the National Government ordered "the National Shandong University to be temporarily closed" and the books were temporarily handed over to the National Central Library for safekeeping and use.

After War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression's victory, Shandong University resumed its studies in Qingdao in February 1946. Books and documents moved to Sichuan were returned at the end of 10, totaling more than 90 boxes, including 3398 books in western languages and 5 books in thread-bound form. After that, the school took over 6,674 German and Japanese books, managed 5,349 Japanese books of China Institute of Engineering, donated about 2,000 books privately, and repurchased 832 1 book of Chinese and Western books, which was slightly enriched.

1June 2, 949, Qingdao was liberated and Shandong University was taken over by the people's government. 1958, the school moved from Qingdao to Jinan, and the library also moved to Jinan.

In 1966, the library collected more than/kloc-0,000,000 volumes. According to the sorting count in 1979, the total number of school books reached 1.5 million. Among them, there are 800,000 copies in Chinese, 400,000 copies in line, 200,000 copies in foreign languages and 654.38+10,000 copies of periodicals. 1986, the school library reached1850,000 copies.

By 2000, the library has two new and old buildings, plus a part of Shaw Science Museum, with an area of16,000 square meters, reading rooms 17, reading seats 1400, four book lending points, and nearly 700,000 open-shelf books. There are 2.3 million books in the library, including 6,543,800 Chinese books and periodicals, 6,543,800 foreign books and periodicals, and the rest are distributed in libraries of 25 departments (institutes). Shandong University Library is the only national CALIS project member library in Shandong comprehensive university library. The library of Shandong Medical University was formerly known as cheeloo university Augustine Library and Shandong Medical College Library.

1903, the Anglo-American Christian Church held a meeting and decided to merge three Christian medical colleges in Shandong Province into "* * * United Medical College", including the books in the school. Thus the history of the library of Shandong Medical University began. When the library was first built, the collection of books was very limited, and most of them were original English books brought by missionaries from abroad. In addition to theology, the content is mostly natural science and medicine.

19 17, cheeloo university was formally established, and Xi en was appointed as the curator. He hired Mr. Wang Tiangang to handle the affairs of the whole museum. During his tenure, he did a lot of work for the library, set up a branch library outside the main library, and planned to prepare for the construction of the new library. 1922, Augustine Library (originally located on the seventh floor of Baotuquan Campus of Shandong University) was built and put into use, and Patana succeeded as the librarian. 1922 Mr. John C.B. Kuei, the first person in China to receive a doctor's degree in American library science, is the director of cheeloo university Library. Later, he served as the director of the library of National Central University, and published the book "The Complete Collection of Classifications" in 1935. From 65438 to 0926, Pi Gaopin was the curator of cheeloo university Library. In view of the deficiency of Dewey's decimal classification at that time, he collected information and studied hard during his tenure, which laid a good foundation for compiling a new classification later.

1930, cheeloo university Institute of Chinese Studies was established, which became the earliest research institution of Chinese Studies in China at that time. Lao She, Gu Jiegang, Qian Mu, Yan Gengwang, Hao Liquan, Yu Tianyang, Wang Dunhua, Fan Dirui and other famous scholars have studied it successively, which once became the focus of sinology research in China. At the same time, following the surging trend of "sorting out the national heritage" in the cultural circle, cheeloo university became one of the six missionary universities participating in the Chinese studies education and research project of Harvard Yanjing Society under the sponsorship of the American Hall Fund, and received a special fund of 6.5438+0.5 million US dollars. The Institute of Chinese Studies attaches great importance to books and materials, and the number of books purchased in the first year has nearly tripled.

According to the statistics of cheeloo university 1936 in June, the library has collected more than 8000 books. The book collection of 1937 is conservatively estimated to have exceeded120,000 copies, most of which were purchased with funds from Harvard Yanjing Society. This is the most abundant period of Augustine Library. The library management is in place, and the ancient books have four sets of blue cloth letters, which are well preserved and can be called excellent. The inspection results of 1932 show that since 1922, more than 80 Chinese and English books have been lost in libraries alone, with an average of 8-9 books lost every year.

After the outbreak of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, cheeloo university moved to Chengdu, but books and materials did not follow. After a period of re-purchase, according to the annual report of 1940 Sinology Institute, there are many rare books in Sinology, which provide basic conditions for the teaching and research of Sinology Institute. After War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression's victory, cheeloo university moved back to Jinan, and more than 20,000 books and materials were lost. In the next two years, due to the rising prices and the shortage of funds for the Institute of Chinese Studies, the number of books increased very little. Later, the funds gradually recovered, and the collection of books once reached 1 18000.

1952, Chiru University was dissolved in the adjustment of departments, and Augustine Library was dissolved. Of the nearly140,000 books,10,000 books were received by Shandong Normal University (now Shandong Normal University), and medical books and buildings were inherited by Shandong Medical College. In addition, Shandong University has received a batch of books.

1932 In August, Shandong Provincial Medical College was established in Jinan. The school's books are mainly in German and Japanese. During the period of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the school moved to Wanxian County, Sichuan Province, and resumed its economy in June 1946+00. In August, it was renamed as Shandong Provincial Medical College 18, 1948. On September 24th of the same year, it was taken over by the Arms Control Committee of Jinan Special City, and it was merged into East China bethune medical school 1 1 in June.

The college obtained a batch of books and materials provided by the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency through Mr. Soong Ching Ling. 1948165438+10 merged with Shandong provincial medical college, and1950 65438+was renamed Shandong medical college in February.

1952, cheeloo university medical college and Shandong medical college merged to form the new Shandong medical college. The newly established library of Shandong Medical College is located in the former site of Augustine Library, covering an area of about 800 square meters, with a collection of 3 1.7 thousand volumes, 369 Chinese and foreign magazines ordered, 3 staff members 1.3, and Professor Sun Shaoqian concurrently serves as the curator. 1954 moved the library to Kangmu Chapel, 1963 moved to the first and second floors of the eighth floor of the newly-built teaching building. 1965 books 189200 books, and 987 Chinese and foreign magazines were ordered. During the "Cultural Revolution", the library was once closed. Later, with the relocation of the school, a part of Loude Branch was set aside when it was established, which caused great losses. 1976, the library collected 274,600 books and ordered 607 Chinese and foreign magazines.

The new library was completed in 198 1 year, with a construction area of 672 1 square meter, including 2 100 square meters of stacks. 1985 changed its name to Shandong Medical University Library. 1986 there are 395300 volumes after the old books are removed. The collection of 199 1 year is: 23 volumes in Chinese, 86,837 volumes in foreign languages and 86 volumes in bound periodicals.

As of 1959, the library has 26 1600 books.
