It is a national "double-first-class" university, a university jointly built by ministries and provinces, a key university built by the national "2 1 1 project" and a national "comprehensive strength improvement project for universities in the central and western regions".

Xinjiang Medical University, located in Urumqi, Xinjiang, is the only independent medical college in Xinjiang.
