A brief history of archaeology in Jilin University
The Department of Archaeology of Jilin University (later renamed Archaeology and Museology) was founded in 1950s. At that time, Mr. Yu, a famous archaeologist, was the leader of the discipline, and a research room for ancient Chinese characters was set up in the history department to recruit graduate students. 1972, the archaeology major of Jilin University was established, with Mr. Zhang Zhongpei as the head of the major. Undergraduate enrollment begins 1973. During the period of 1987, the major of archaeology and museology was separated from the history department, and an independent archaeology department was established, with Mr. Lin Yun as the head of the department. In 2000, the frontier archaeological research center of this discipline was approved as the key research base of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, with Professor Hong Chu as the director of the center. The discipline of archaeology and museology was the first batch of doctoral degree authorization points awarded by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee in 198 1. In 2000, it was awarded the post-doctoral research station of history, and in the same year it was included in the "2 1 1 project" national key discipline construction project during the tenth five-year plan period. In 2005, the "Innovation Base of Chinese Frontier History and Geography" based on this discipline was identified as the national "985 Project" philosophy and social science innovation base. After several generations and years of construction, the discipline has now formed a high-level faculty composed of more than 20 professors, associate professors and young doctors, and its comprehensive research strength in ancient Chinese culture, human beings and the environment is in a leading position in China.
