Hainan University, located in Haikou City, Hainan Province, is a university jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the Hainan Provincial People's Government, a university jointly established by the Hainan Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Finance, a comprehensive key university in Hainan Province, and a key university supported by the construction of first-class universities in China Province. Ranked among the national "double-class" and "2 1 1 project".

The school's predecessor was the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture founded by 1958 and the former Hainan University founded by 1983. In August 2007, the two universities merged into the new Hainan University. 20 17 was selected as the national "world-class discipline" construction university.

By 2022, Hainan University will be ranked 130 in China University of Soft Science in 2022.
