Harbin Engineering University 1966 withdrew from the army and was renamed Harbin Institute of Technology. 1970 Harbin Institute of Shipbuilding Engineering (Harbin Institute of Shipbuilding Engineering) was established in Harbin's former military site with the Department of Naval Engineering as the main body. 1978 was designated as a national key university by the State Council. 1994 was renamed Harbin Engineering University (Harbin Engineering).
