School 1938 originated from the Department of Forestry of Yunnan University, and 1958 was founded in Kunming Agriculture and Forestry College. 1973, the Forestry Department of Kunming Agriculture and Forestry College merged with Beijing Forestry College, which moved south to Kunming, to form Yunnan Forestry College. After Beijing Forestry College 1978 moved back to Beijing, the school was changed to Yunnan Forestry College, which was directly managed by the former Forestry Department.

1983 was renamed Southwest Forestry College, which is one of the six regional forestry undergraduate colleges directly under the Ministry of Forestry. In 2000, the school was transformed from a university directly under the former State Forestry Administration into a central and local * * * building, with provincial management as the main part.

20 10 was renamed as Southwest Forestry University. The school has three national first-class majors, four national outstanding agricultural and forestry talents training programs, three national outstanding engineers training programs, five provincial majors, eight national first-class specialty construction sites and 24 provincial first-class specialty construction sites.
