The Historical Evolution of Shanghai Santa Maria Girls' School
Santa Maria Girls' High School was founded in 188 1, formerly known as Wenji Girls' High School and Piwen Girls' High School. The school is located in Baili South Road (now 165438 Changning Road +087).

185 1 year, Ms. Jones of the Anglican Church established a girls' school behind the Shanghai Hongkou chapel and named it Moon Hee. At the beginning, Wenji had only eight students. In the morning, they study the simple Bible and four books, and the rest of the time they study textile, sewing, cooking and gardening. 10 years later, another missionary, Ms. Grande of the Anglican Church of America, founded another girls' school in Shanghai in memory of her late husband, Mr. Biwen, and named it after her husband. The female students here learn not only the Bible, Chinese and arithmetic, but also sewing and embroidery.

186 1 Piwen girls' school was established.

188 1 year, Moon Hee and Biwen merged to form St. Mary's Church, which is located in the campus of St. John's University on Wanhangdu Road. In the first year, it enrolled 28 students, and the first principal was Ms. Su Huang E, a native of China.

1881June, the Anglican Church of America donated the church to merge Wenji and Biwen schools and established Santa Maria Girls' School. The new school building is built behind St. John's College at Van Gogh Ferry, and the whole campus is in ancient Greek style. At this time, St. John's College and St. Mary's Girls' School are separated by a wall, but male and female students are never allowed to talk except in church on Sunday. The school has just enrolled more than 40 students, which will increase every year. 1885, the girls' school has a nursery, and Su Huange is in charge.

1900, the school held its first graduation ceremony, and only one student Zhu Jingzhen graduated.

1923, Santa Maria Girls' School moved into the new school building of Baili South Road (now Changning Road) and was renamed Santa Maria Girls' Middle School. Most of the enrollment targets are women from upper-middle class families. By the end of 1929, there were eight-year graduates 100, teachers' graduates 17, junior high school graduates 137, senior high school graduates 145, and 63 Chinese special students. At this time, Santa Maria Girls' School has become an aristocratic girls' school. The school carries out education in full accordance with the American method: in addition to compulsory courses, there are elective courses such as religious activities, domestic training and music and dance performances to teach etiquette and social knowledge to the western upper class. The one-year tuition fee is generally 84 yuan, which is equivalent to the salary of ordinary workers 10 month; One-year tuition fee for learning western languages 168 yuan, excluding other meals and miscellaneous fees. Such a high cost is obviously difficult for ordinary people to support. Since then, Santa Maria Girls' Middle School has become the second aristocratic church girls' middle school in Shanghai after Chinese and western girls' middle schools.
