What was the predecessor of Central South University?
Central South University was formerly known as Hunan Medical University, and Changsha Railway Institute and Central South University of Technology merged in April 2000.

Central South University was formed in April 2000 by the merger of Hunan Medical University, Changsha Railway Institute and Central South University of Technology. The predecessor of the former Central South University of Technology was the Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy founded by 1952, and the predecessor of the former Changsha Railway Institute was the Central South Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture founded by 1953.

In China, the discipline of civil engineering enjoys the reputation of "second-hand carriage". Hunan Medical University, formerly known as Xiangya Medical College, was founded in 19 14. It is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning of western medicine in China, enjoying the reputation of "Southern Xiangya, Northern Concord". Central South University has gathered and trained a large number of well-known experts and scholars, party and government enterprises and other outstanding talents from all fronts, including Chen, Huang Peiyun and other engineering predecessors. Zhang, Tang, Li Zhenpian, Xie Shaowen and other modern medical masters.

There are 5 directly affiliated hospitals and 3 non-directly affiliated hospitals, including Hunan Cancer Hospital, Haikou People's Hospital, Zhuzhou Central Hospital and 24 clinical teaching bases.

By September 2022, the school had 6,069 faculty members, including China Academy of Sciences 1 person, China Academy of Engineering 17 person, 34 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 26 leading talents of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program" and 9 chief scientists of the "973 Program" (including 2 youth programs)
