Like Nantah and Southeast University, Jiangsu University is the first national central university in Asia. National Central University originated from Sanjiang Normal School.

In 1960, with the approval of the State Planning Commission, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agricultural Machinery, Nanjing Agricultural Machinery College was established. Jiangsu University has a history of 100 years. It is a university jointly established by the People's Government of Jiangsu Province, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. It is also the first batch of universities in China with the right to award doctoral and master's degrees. It is a class A construction university under the peak plan of high-level university construction in Jiangsu Province.
