The Institute of Oriental Culture was founded by Professor Lin Xudian, a famous Singaporean educator and sinologist. Professor Lin has taught in the Chinese Department of the National University of Singapore for more than 30 years and served as the head of the department for nearly 30 years. The Institute of Oriental Culture was established in 1993, registered with the approval of the Ministry of Education, and its director is Professor Lin. The Institute of Oriental Culture takes the promotion of oriental culture and the communication between eastern and western cultures as its main purpose and the principle of teaching students in accordance with their aptitude as its principle, and provides various opportunities for young students at home and abroad to further their studies. Approved by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government in 2003, it was upgraded to Shanghai Oriental Culture Vocational College (renamed Shanghai Zhendan Vocational College in 2005).
