Renaming Chinese Translation Names of Wollongong University
"Wollongong" means "a hill occupied by dragons". Although the pronunciation of the old and new school names is similar to the English pronunciation of "Wollongong", we think that "Wollongong University" is not suitable for further use for the following two reasons:

1. This translation is too China.

The word "Dragon" in the name of the school suggests to the audience in China that our school has elements of China traditional culture, or is an existing overseas branch of China University. This has caused unnecessary trouble to China students seeking overseas education.

2. The translated names have strong regional characteristics of China.

"Wollongong" is a place name in China's classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms, so some people think that our school is located in China, and there is indeed a college with the same name in this area.

New name-University of Wollongong

"University of Wollongong" was finally named as the new school name for two main reasons:

1. There is no difference.

In Chinese, "Wolong Gong" has no bad meaning. Three words are translated separately: five; Morality and peace; Thank you. Taken together, they have no special meaning and meet the requirements of English translation.

It is already in use.

The official maps and encyclopedias of China Map Publishing House have used "Wollongong" as the city name of Wollongong. It is also widely used by the Ministry of Education of China and some universities in China that cooperate with our school (for example, the cooperation project between Zhengzhou University and Wollongong University).

2065438+At the beginning of 2005, the International Admissions Office officially changed the Chinese translation name of the school to Wollongong University for Chinese-speaking countries.
