Tohoku University is a national university and the third national university in Japan after Tokyo University and Kyoto University. It is located in Sendai, northeast Japan. Northeastern University (Japanese: とぅほくだぃがく, English: Tohoku University), referred to as Northeastern University.
The school ranks first in the world in metal materials science. Physics, chemistry, electrical and electronic engineering ranked in the top 50 in the world. In 2007, Northeastern University ranked 42nd in the world and 4th in Japan. In the ranking of world universities' scientific research competitiveness published by Korean University in 2007, Tohoku University in Japan ranked 76th in the world and 4th in Japan.
