Practical English examination in colleges and universities is divided into two grades: A and B. A-level examination is the standard requirement for higher vocational students, while B-level examination is slightly lower than A-level examination, which is a transitional requirement. The full name is "Practical English Test for Colleges", or PRETCO for short. The abbreviation is CET-3. Grade A is taken by excellent college students, and the difficulty is higher than Grade B but lower than Grade 4. Grade B is attended by junior college students with weak English foundation, and the difficulty is equivalent to the English level from grade three to senior high school, which is lower than Grade A. 。

This syllabus is applicable to non-English majors in higher vocational education, general higher education, adult higher education and secondary technical schools run by undergraduate students who have completed all the contents stipulated in the basic requirements.

Second, the nature of the examination.

The purpose of this examination is to assess the candidates' language knowledge, language skills and basic ability to handle general business and foreign-related communication in English, and its nature is a teaching level examination.

Third, the examination method and content

The examination method is written, including listening comprehension, grammatical structure, reading comprehension, translation (English-Chinese translation) and writing (or Chinese-English translation). The scope of the examination is all the contents stipulated in the basic requirements of Grade A. 。

Part one: Listening comprehension.

Test the examinee's ability to understand dialogues, conversations and short passages. The speed of listening materials is 120 words per minute. Dialogues, conversations and essays are mainly based on daily life and practical communication content. The vocabulary is limited to 3400 words in the Glossary of Basic Requirements, and the communication content covers all the listening and speaking ranges listed in the Table of Basic Requirements.

Part II: Grammatical structure.

Test candidates' ability to use grammar knowledge. The test scope includes all the contents specified in the grammar structure table in the basic requirements.

Part III: Reading comprehension.

Test the ability of candidates to obtain information from written materials. The total reading is about 1 1,000 words. The written materials for this part of the test include general reading materials (culture, society, common sense, popular science, economy and trade, people, etc. ) and applied words, excluding poetry, novels, essays and other literary materials, whose content is understandable by students of all majors. Among them, practical written materials account for about 60%.

The language skills and vocabulary involved in reading materials are limited to all the skills listed in the "Reading Skills Table" in the Basic Requirements and the range of 3400 words in the Glossary; Apart from general articles, the reading of practical articles is limited to the reading and translation scope specified in the "Communication Scope Table" in the basic requirements, such as letters and telegrams, advertisements, brochures, business documents, contracts, abstracts, prefaces, etc.

Mainly test the following reading skills:

The score of this part accounts for 35% of the total score. The examination time is 40 minutes.

Part IV: Translation-English translation.

Test candidates' ability to correctly translate English into Chinese. The translated materials are sentences and paragraphs, including general content and practical content (about 50% each); The vocabulary involved is limited to 3400 words in the basic vocabulary.

This part of the score accounts for 20% of the total score. The test time is 25 minutes.

Part V: Writing/Translation-Chinese-English translation.

Test candidates' ability to write practical writing, letters, fill in English forms or translate short and practical words.
