Southwest University of Political Science and Law was founded in 1950, with Marshal Liu Bocheng as the president. 1953, based on Southwest People's Revolutionary University, Chongqing University, Sichuan University, Guizhou University, Yunnan University and Chongqing University of Finance and Economics Law School were merged to form Southwest College of Political Science and Law, and General Zhou Baozhong, the former commander-in-chief of the Second Route Army of Northeast Anti-Japanese Allied Forces, became the first president. 1958, Chongqing Branch of Central Public Security College was merged into the school. Because of its special background, the school gathered the main resources of the legal circles in southwest China at that time, so it was called "New China Southwest University of Political Science and Law".
In the process of development, the school has experienced many changes in its affiliation. During the "Cultural Revolution", it was once forced to close. 1977 enrollment resumed with the approval of the central government. During the period of 1978, due to the fact that four schools of political science and law, such as Beijing University of Political Science and Law, have not resumed classes, Southwest University of Political Science and Law was approved by the State Council as a national key university, and it is the only national key university directly under the Ministry of Justice. 1995, renamed Southwest University of Political Science and Law.
