Nanchang University was founded in 192 1 Jiangxi Public Medical College, 1940 National Chung Cheng University. 1993, Jiangxi University and Jiangxi University of Science and Technology merged to form Nanchang University. In 2005, Nanchang University merged with Jiangxi Medical College to form the new Nanchang University.

As of March, 20 18, the school has five campuses: Qianhu, Qingshan Lake, Donghu Lake, Poyang Lake and Fuzhou, among which the main campus of Qianhu covers an area of 4,520 mu, with a construction area of 6,543,800 square meters.
