Beijing Jiaotong University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Transport, the Beijing Municipal People's Government and China Railway Corporation. It is a national "2 1 1 Project", "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" and "Double First Class" construction university.

The school has two campuses in the east and west, located in Haidian District, Beijing, which is known as the "University Resort", with a total area of nearly 1 10,000 mu and a building area of 1 10,000 square meters. Weihai Campus is located in Weihai City, Shandong Province, covering an area of 1 1,000 mu. Each campus has perfect teaching and research facilities and a beautiful campus environment.

In Huanghua City, Hebei Province, there is a comprehensive research and development experimental base for Binhai rail transit of Beijing Jiaotong University. Building a world-class Fengtai rail transit "Industry-University-Research" integrated innovation base in Fengtai District; Tangshan Research Institute was established in Tangshan City, Hebei Province, focusing on building a demonstration zone for scientific and technological research and development, achievement transformation and international education and training.

The school has 60 colleges, including Electronic Information Engineering College, Computer and Information Technology College, Economic Management College, Transportation College, Civil Engineering College, Mechanical and Electronic Control Engineering College, Electrical Engineering College, Mathematics and Statistics College, Physical Science and Engineering College, Language and Communication College, Software College, Marxism College, Architecture and Art College, Law School, Environment College, National Secrecy College and Zhan Tianyou College (Smart Transportation Future Science and Technology College).
