The Forensic Medicine Identification Center of Sun Yat-sen University was established on the basis of Sun Yat-sen University. The Forensic Medicine Identification Group was established in 1953, and was designated as the only forensic medicine professional examination and identification institution by the Guangdong Provincial Government in 2000. In July 2008, the center was recognized by the laboratory/inspection organization of China National Accreditation Committee for Conformity Assessment.

The center is a judicial authentication institution that has been audited and registered by the judicial administrative organ. The business scope approved by judicial expertise includes: forensic pathology appraisal, forensic clinical appraisal, forensic material evidence appraisal, forensic poison appraisal and forensic psychosis appraisal.
