Nanyang University in Singapore is the first overseas Chinese university in history and the only Chinese university in Southeast Asia and even overseas. Historical background
In the colonial era before the Second World War, Chinese education in Malaysia and Singapore was not concerned by colonial governments, but was entirely undertaken by Chinese communities living in the region. Therefore, China schools in this area follow the prevailing education system in China. Although the development of education in China only reached the middle school stage before the war, it was not difficult for middle school graduates from China schools to return to China for further study.
Education in China is still considered to have a complete system. 1949 to 1949, after China came to power by the * * * production party, the way for high school graduates from China schools to go to China for further study was suddenly cut off.
At that time, the colonial government, which evaded the responsibility of Chinese education, did not seem to notice the extensiveness and seriousness of the problems caused by the inability of many China middle school graduates to continue their studies. The government still abandoned these young people to enter the newly established University of Malaya, which is the only higher education institution established by the colonial government for this area.
