Jinan University, headquartered in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, is directly under the leadership of the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee and jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the United Front Work Department and Guangdong Province. It is a national "double-class" and national "2 1 1 project" construction university.

The school's predecessor was Jinan School, which was founded by the Qing government in Nanjing on 1906. Later, it moved to Shanghai, and 1927 was renamed as National Jinan University. During his stay in War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, he moved to Jianyang, Fujian.

1946 moved back to Shanghai,1949 merged with Fudan University, Jiaotong University and other universities in August. After the founding of New China, Jinan University was rebuilt in Guangzhou, 1958. Suspended during the Cultural Revolution, 1978 reopened in Guangzhou.

By March 2022, the school had five campuses in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai, with a total campus area of 2143,000 square meters and a school building area of 18 10 1000 square meters. There are 38 colleges, 58 departments and 27 directly affiliated research institutes.
