Jiangsu Second Normal University is a provincial-level ordinary undergraduate school featuring teacher education and focusing on training primary and preschool teachers. The school is located in the famous historical and cultural city of Nanjing. It is a national training base for backbone teachers and principals of primary and secondary schools, a pilot training base for principals of primary and secondary schools of the Ministry of Education, the only experimental base for teacher education reform in the province, a research base for decision-making consultation in Jiangsu Province, and a research base for the construction of a strong education province in Jiangsu Province. Selected as the first batch of "Excellent Teacher Training Plan" and "New Engineering Research and Practice Project" by the Ministry of Education. The school and Jiangsu Academy of Educational Sciences implement the operation mechanism of "two brands and one team".

The school, formerly known as Jiangsu Institute of Education, was founded in 1952. It is one of the 17 public undergraduate schools established earlier in Jiangsu Province in the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Jiangsu Institute of Education 1959 held undergraduate course, 1978 resumed undergraduate course, 1996 resumed undergraduate course. In 20 13, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school was transformed into a provincial-level ordinary undergraduate school and renamed Jiangsu Second Normal University.
