The school was founded on 1954. Since 2000, it has been formed by the merger of Shanghai Institute of Light Industry, Shanghai Institute of Metallurgy, Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology and Shanghai Institute of Spice, which are state-level demonstration institutions under the former Ministry of Light Industry. Approved by the Ministry of Education on 20 16, it was renamed as "Shanghai Universities of Applied Sciences".
