Switzerland has no federal Ministry of Education, and the cantons enjoy educational autonomy, while the federal government has only legislative power in principle. Federal universities and federal research institutes are managed by the Federal Ministry of the Interior; State universities are managed by local governments; Higher professional colleges are managed by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs.
The traditional academic system of Swiss universities is five years, and the medical major is six years. Give a diploma (Lizenziat), and students who get a diploma can study for a doctorate. Federal Higher Vocational College is a combination of colleges and universities composed of several independent colleges. The length of schooling varies from major to major, usually 2 to 4 years. Such colleges have no right to award doctorates.
1999, Switzerland began to carry out the "Bologna Declaration" reform, and gradually implemented the unified 3-5-8 diploma system in Europe, that is, three years to get a bachelor's degree, five years to get a master's degree, and eight years to get a doctorate.
